Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary healthcare that addresses the root cause of illness or disease and promotes health and healing using natural therapies.

Naturopathic physicians base their practice on six principles founded on medical tradition and scientific evidence:

1. Let nature heal
The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of an illness rather than simply treating or suppressing symptoms.

2. Identify and treat causes.
Naturopathic physicians understand that symptoms will return unless the root illness has been treated. Rather than covering up symptoms, they seek for the cause of these symptoms in order to prevent them from reoccurring.

3. First, do no harm
Use low-risk procedures and healing compounds, with few or no side effects. - Customize each diagnosis and treatment plan to fit each patient. 4. Educate patients Naturopathic medicine believes that doctors must be educators. Naturopathic doctors work collaboratively with patients by sharing knowledge and information to create a successful treatment plan. Patients are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health. 5.

Treat the whole person

In addition to addressing specific complaints or symptoms, Naturopathic doctors look at the ‘whole picture’. The physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors contributing to the health of each individual patient are thoroughly considered.

6. Prevent illness
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" has never been truer. Naturopathic doctors evaluate risk factors, heredity and vulnerability to disease. By getting treatment for greater wellness, we are less likely to need treatment for future illness.

The range of therapies available, allows naturopathic doctors to be flexible in designing the best and most suitable treatment plan possible for each individual patient, which may include:
